Fundamentals of Singing

Saturday, November 16 ~ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Fundamentals of Singing is a full day of learning and singing facilitated by ICA Vocal Arts Director Michael Rocchio and ICA Artistic Director Angela Rocchio. Fundamentals of Singing is an experiential and highly participatory experience. Concepts and distinctions are presented followed by practical application through individual skill-building and ensemble singing. Participants will learn proper, healthful singing technique, vowel formation, intonation, diction techniques, vocal blending, and distinctions in vocal excellence. Additionally, Mr. Rocchio will share tips, tricks, and “cheats” gleaned from his many years as a professional singer that serve to ease execution of the vocal skills learned during the day.

A workbook will be provided for use with this session, and lunch will be provided.

No charge for Saint Joseph Marello parishioners. $75 per person for non-parishioners.

If you do not belong to St. Joseph Marello Catholic Parish, proceed to III: Agreements.

Fundamentals of Cantoring (St Joseph Marello cantors only)

Friday, November 15 ~ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Fundamentals of Cantoring is a full-day participative workshop co-facilitated by ICA Vocal Arts Director, Michael Rocchio, and ICA Artistic Director Angela Rocchio. A cantor’s responsibility is to bring sacred text to life through song and deliver messages in a manner whereby the congregation truly hears it, reflects upon it, and takes it to heart. Sadly, most cantors sound uninspired. Fundamentals of Cantoring is designed for singers already serving as cantors, who are committed to learning how to be more effective in their role as psalmist and leader of song.

Participants will interactively learn the art and techniques of interpreting text and delivering sacred messages engagingly and with intentionality. A practice session in the church, with the microphone and sound system turned on, will provide opportunity for them to practice their skills and receive feedback.

Lunch will be provided.

Introduction to Chant (St Joseph Marello music program only)

Thursday, November 14 ~ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Participants will learn from ICA Artistic Director, Angela Rocchio, the basics of chant notation on the four line staff, and practice the use of solfège, a proven methodology for learning to read, hear, and sing music notation. Processes used in this very interactive session will develop the singers’ critical awareness of accuracy in pitch, confidence in hearing and singing the eight “church” modes (or Gregorian modes), and establish a solid foundation for sight singing on the four line staff.
